Honda makes their return to the adventure market with the rebootedAfrica Twin. Like its Dakar-winning predecessors， it’s designed toconquer the toughest terrain you can throw at it. A lot can happenwhen you leave the pavement on a 534-lb (242-kg) motorcycle. TheAltRider skid plate was engineered from the ground up to providebetter coverage， strength and ground clearance than any other skidplate on the market. The optional AltRider Skid Plate Extension isa modular add-on part that extends our already generous skid plateprotection all the way back to the rear shock linkage.

Honda’s Africa Twin utilizes a classic dirtbike-inspired dual framerail. AltRider embraced this approach by designing a skid platethat builds on the advantages provided by this type of frame.Unlike other designs on the market， AltRider utilizes 4 boltlocations on the frame instead of nesting the bracket on one side.This bracket design provides a strong platform to mount the skidplate using 4 heavy duty M8 (5／16”) bolts.

Ground clearance is an extremely important but often overlookedconsideration， especially on bigger bikes. Honda made the effort togive this bike substantial clearance， and thanks to the bike’sframe rail design the AltRider skid plate was engineered to retainas much of that clearance as possible when installed. Some skidplates utilize a corrugated design to enhance strength， but thosedesigns also sacrifice clearance. The AltRider skid plate was givena smooth bottom design for max clearance and easy maneuvering overobstacles， and the 4 mounting points on the frame rails make upthat strength.

AltRider’s intelligent bracket design allows users to change theoil with the bracket in place. The skid plate (without optionalextension) is also compatible with the center stand on， and can beinstalled on both DCT and manual transmission models. The one-pieceskid plate is simple to install， and all top-quality hardware isprovided.

The AltRider Skid Plate Extension is for those riders who are notusing a center stand and who want maximum coverage for theunderside of their machine. The key to the design is the use of tworobust rearward mounting points to create a stiff structure for theadditional plate area. The Skid Plate Extension tail extends only3.75” beyond our rearmost mount point. Contrast that with some ofour competition who have 10.5” of completely unsupportedmaterial.

The forward part of the skid extension sandwiches to the existingAltRider skid plate bracket. The rear of our extension mounts onthe left side to the center stand pivot point， and on the right tothe massive factory frame bracket. This sandwich construction meansthat the main skid plate is further strengthened by having two moreattachment points to spread any load to. By using the factory framebracket we are able to pick up a robust mount point as far rearwardas possible， which creates a much more rigid structure for the tailof our skid. This part is specifically engineered to fit perfectlywith the AltRider Skid Plate for the Honda Africa Twin， andrequires that skid plate be installed.
